Out of my proposed projects two have been selected based on my skills set, future career plans and unit objectives stated in my learning agreement. In this blog post we will be discussing unit objectives one and four.

Objective one: To expand your knowledge and abilities in the development of a body of work that demonstrates creative and technical mastery.

Objective Four: To embed the relationship the outcome has with contemporary professional practice.

The two projects chosen by myself are:

The Heydar Aliyev Centre by Zaha Hadid (Azerbaijan).

Echo House by KLC (Beijing)

As I will be persuing a career in architectural modelmaking, I felt both projects were perfect for displaying my skillset as an architectural modelmaker whilst pushing the boundaries through use of high level - professional; technical process' such as grasshopper and V-Ray. In conjunction with use of professional construction and fabrication techniques expected as industry standard. This use of cutting-edge modelling software combined with the creative genius of Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Centre will allow for me to demonstrate the extraordinary creative ability of current rapid prototyping methods integrated with traditional workshop / hand prototyping methods. Allowing for execution and demonstration of Unit Aim 1.

From amassing a large CV of work experience placements, I have seen first-hand the software and visual reference associated with the creative process' of building design and production. As a modelmaker I was commonly expected to demonstrate knowledge of traditional hand craft techniques and mastery of workshop machinery. Paired with Rhino modelling ability, and the associated use of laser cutting and 3D printing. To supersede these process' I have decided to learn and develop skills in Grasshopper (a Rhino plug-in) streamlining, CAD Modelling, and attempting to take it to the next level in anticipation of becoming a well-respected, knowledgeable contributor to the team I will be working with in future.

Production of the Echo House is designed to further demonstrate technical mastery of contemporary painting through speckling effects and texturing to augment materials. Something that is harder to showcase with the Heydar Aliyev Centre as it is completely white and use of contemporary manufacturing techniques integrated with traditional construction techniques.

To summarise, the Heydar Aliyev Centre was chosen as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of complex and creative modelmaking / architecture. Pushing the boundaries of my own skillset through use of self-taught highly complex software. Whereas the Echo House is designed to further exhibit technical mastery and knowledge of contemporary professional practice by helping to fill in the skill set gaps that the Heydar Aliyev Centre doesn't allow me to illustrate as profoundly. Particularly in Painting. Whilst providing a professional show piece that fits with the theme of my portfolio and attracts potential employers particularly through New Blades.
